IBM has a dedicated Vice President of IT Security who leads a team responsible for IBM's own enterprise data security standards and practices. Responsibility and accountability for executing internal security programs is established through formal documented policies. IBM Services teams also have dedicated executives and teams who are responsible for information and physical security in the delivery of our client services.

Operational security

Operational security
Configuration and change management standard Conforms to a recognised standard, for example CSA CCM v3.0 or SSAE-16 / ISAE 3402
Configuration and change management approach All Change Requests affecting the Production Environment are captured within the Watson Analytics Configuration Management System. The requests must first be approved by the Change Advisory Board which consists of members from Cloud Operations, Development and Quality Assurance. If one or more groups does not approve the change made into Production, the change is not allowed. Changes are assessed for potential security impact.
Vulnerability management type Supplier-defined controls
Vulnerability management approach Automated tools are used to scan the Watson Analytics environment and identify required patches. The severity of the patches identify the required timeline by which the patch needs to be in place. Patch deployment follow the IBM change management process that mandates they are tested prior to deploying to production. With the highly available architecture and infrastructure, patches may be continuously pushed to production seamlessly.
Protective monitoring type Supplier-defined controls
Protective monitoring approach A SoftLayer (IBM Hosting) Network Operations Centre (NOC) team monitors network performance and security 24x7 at the outer edge. Automated DDoS mitigation controls are in place should a DDoS attack occur. From a Watson Analytics perspective, IBM DataPower acts as the reverse proxy that front ends all traffic into the Watson Analytics internal network. DataPower traffic is analysed to detect surge from source IPs.
Incident management type Conforms to a recognised standard, for example, CSA CCM v3.0 or ISO/IEC 27035:2011 or SSAE-16 / ISAE 3402
Incident management approach Watson Analytics follows the IBM Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT) process for security incident management (https://www.ibm.com/security/secure-engineering/process.html) process. IBM is committed to proactively responding to new threats and risks. IBM's Secure Engineering (http://www-03.ibm.com/security/secure-engineering/) practices enable IBM to act in a timely fashion to a reported security vulnerability in an IBM solution.

IBM strives to deliver a release of a security patch as soon as possible after the release of a security patch from a 3rd party. For critical security exposures, e.g. Heartbleed, Shellshock, Poodle, IBM has communicated rapidly via the PSIRT blog on the status and delivered fixes within days.
