Service constraints
Published views and dashboards are accessible from any platform and from any current browser. Tableau Online Visualisation has reduced data connection options compared with our Tableau Private Visualisation service. There are EEA and US availability zones, but no UK-specific zones. Dashboards must be built using a Windows or Mac desktop or laptop. Each Tableau Online site is allowed a maximum of 100 GB storage.
System requirements
  • Access to public internet to publish dashboards
  • Modern browser or Tableau mobile app to consume dashboards
  • Dashboard design requires EITHER: Windows or Mac desktop (client hosted)
  • OR: Browser and Remote Desktop Web Client (private cloud hosted)

Onboarding and offboarding

Getting started
There are four types of onboarding help available, which may be used in combination: online help; key contact getting started assistance; additional onboarding assistance; service training courses. Key contact getting started assistance is included within the cost of the service. It is usually conducted as an interactive web screenshare session, but may also be provided as a pre-recorded video session with a follow up teleconference, or as an onsite session. Onsite sessions outside the M25 area will incur an additional cost. Online help is available to all client users of the service and is included within the cost. Additional onboarding assistance and service training courses are both provided via the companion Cloud Support service.

End-of-contract data extraction
The service has built-in tools that allow user data extraction. These tools are available at any time, not just at contract end, and may be used for any data extraction purpose required. There are no restrictions: all user data may be extracted from the service for any reason, at any time. User data extraction does not require supplier intervention, but clients may choose to limit this functionality to client super users or administrators. There is no limit to the number or size of data extractions performed, but the service is priced on a "fair use" basis for network charges. Excessively large or very frequent data extractions may incur an additional cost or bandwidth limits. Alternatively, the companion Cloud Support service offers assistance with data extraction, at an additional cost.
End-of-contract process
Prior to the end of contract/contract renewal date, we discuss the forward plan with the client key contact. In the event of contract end, we work with the key contact to ensure that all user data and collateral is retrieved or extracted before the contract end date. Although there are standard data extraction tools built in to the service, there may be a requirement for special data migration to the client's chosen new service. In that instance, we can work with the new supplier to migrate data to maximum benefit for the client, such work would be performed within the companion Cloud Support service and incur an additional charge. In the event that the client is unable to extract all required data before the contract end date, it is often possible to extend the duration of the data extraction features of the service for an additional period; or to extend the full service for an additional period; so that the client does not suffer unnecessary unavailability.

Differences between the mobile and desktop service
The service is designed to deliver a fully consistent user experience across desktop and mobile devices, allowing for differences of screen size and input style. Published dashboards may be accessed and edited with desktop or mobile web browsers, or with the dedicated, free mobile apps. Mobile presentation and interaction is automatically adjusted to provide an optimised experience for smaller screens and touch-input control. Some design features are only available in the desktop applications.
Service interface
Description of service interface
The service employs a modern, simple, browser-based, easy-to-use interface to provide a unified approach for users to interact with the service. Choosing browser-based over an installed application simplifies security, enterprise deployment and ensures that the service is evergreen without costly software upgrades. See answers to other questions concerning browser specifics. All standard user features are available via desktop or mobile web browsers. Mobile browsers are optimised to work with touch input, while desktop browsers support accessibility tools and software. Note that a small group of client super users still require an installed application to perform advanced design and administration tasks.
Accessibility standards
WCAG 2.1 AA or EN 301 549
Accessibility testing
All parts of the service interface are tested using both standard input and assistive technologies, including keyboard navigation and screen readers. In addition to in-house testing, the public beta programme is open to users of assistive technologies. The product toolbars are now Double A conformant including Custom Views, Subscribe and Alerts.
What users can and can't do using the API
Several APIs available to automate or enhance aspects of the standard platform: REST, Extract, Document, Javascript, Web Data Connector and Extensions (in beta May18). A small number of specific functions are not relevant (or available) when using the Tableau Online Visualisation as they relate to the Tableau Private Visualisation. These differences are clearly identified in the online help pages. For example, search online for 'Tableau onlinehelp API Reference'. The REST API can be used for managing users, groups and sites, updating workbooks or datasources and Integrating Tableau content with a custom app or portal. Extract API can be used to create data extracts that improve performance and provide offline access to data. Document API is used to create and deploy templates or migrate workbooks from test to production data sources. Javascript API for embedding Tableau into custom web applications. Allows a bi-directional communication between Tableau and the host application. Web Data Connector: connect to any data via HTTP/HTTPS, providing an HTML interface to end-user, storing into data extracts. Also allows automatic refreshes and authentication. Extensions API can open up a range of capabilities from 'write-back' to custom interface options and bi-directional communication between Tableau and guest application.

Customisation available
Description of customisation
The purpose of Tableau Online Visualisation is to allow customers to create their own analytics, reports and dashboards, each of which is customised to meet specific needs. Automation can be applied to the platform through the use of APIs. In addition the interface can be adapted and tailored to reflect customer branding. At an individual level the users can personalise their experience through the use of favourites, selected 'home pages', custom filter settings on views, etc.

Independence of resources
Tableau Online Visualisation uses technical infrastructure hosted and maintained in EU (Dublin), or (optionally) US availability zones, and activity is constantly monitored to ensure that peak periods are supported by appropriate levels of processing power so that slow-down does not occur as a result of increased activity. Tableau publish a daily (historic) report of service availability and planned maintenance at

Service usage metrics
Metrics types
Metrics are available showing user activity, traffic to views, traffic to data sources, scheduled task activity, performance of views and actions by users. These metrics are presented in real time dashboards within Tableau Online itself, and are available to client super users on request.

Data importing and exporting

Data export approach
There are tools built in to the service that allow users to export their data. User data export does not require supplier intervention, but clients may choose to limit this functionality to client super users or administrators. Users may specifiy any subset, or all, of the data that is relevent to the current export requirement. Once the data subset has been selected, invoking the export function creates a corresponding CSV file, which is then downloaded to the user computer for the required purpose. Data already held in tde or hyper format may be exported directly in that format.

Availability and resilience

Guaranteed availability
Tableau does not provide specific availability guarantees, but has architected the service to remove single points of failure and provide the highest availability possible. Tableau monitors service performance 24x7 and their engineering team works around the clock to resolve issues. Statistics showing current and last 30 days levels of performance and maintenance breaks are published on the internet at No refunds are provided as a result of degraded service.
Approach to resilience
Tableau Online uses multiple, redundant components to provide service resilience in the event of individual component failures. The cloud service is designed to handle fluctuations in user load, in order to maintain performance levels for all users.
Outage reporting
Tableau Online reports good service performance, service degradations, outages and maintenance notices via an online, realtime dashboard at

Configuration and change management standard
Supplier-defined controls
Configuration and change management approach
The configuration and change management processes are designed to support incremental feature releases over multiple platforms (Windows, macOS, Linus, Android, iOS) and at the same time support bug fix and security patches to prior releases, for up to 30 months following original release. Changes to the Tableau Online Visualisation service are managed without significant downtime or loss of service to the customer.
Vulnerability management type
Supplier-defined controls
Vulnerability management approach
The vulnerability management process works both internally and with external researchers to investigate and remediate all identified, demonstrable vulnerabilities. All remediation is included within the next available monthly release, and in an emergency scenario the monthly release schedule is advanced to deliver the required patches as quickly as possible. Security fixes are applied to all currently-supported release versions. Once vulnerabilities are remediated they are disclosed and documented in line with industry best practice.
Protective monitoring type
Supplier-defined controls
Protective monitoring approach
There is no specific protective monitoring process applicable to the Tableau Online Visualisation service, and the service may not be suitable for sensitive, personal or special category data. For these use cases, we recommend our Tableau Private Visualistion service, where we can discuss your requirements and apply appropriate protective monitoring processes or services.
Incident management type
Supplier-defined controls
Incident management approach
The incident management processes utilise an industry leading ticket tracking platform that conforms to the ITIL standard, ensuring that service restoration is prioritised and followed by root cause identification. Any recurring incidents are allocated to problem management teams so that appropriate re-engineering can be applied, and desired service improvements delivered.
