- Who the specialist will work with
- You will be working with the ISIS data reduction /Mantid team (developers), the international ESS team (developers and scientists), and report to the ISIS Computing Group Leader and ESS Computing group leaders
- What the specialist will work on
- STFC’s ISIS Neutron and Muon Facility is delivering data streaming software for the European Spallation Source as part of the UKs in-kind contribution. The developer will be responsible for developing high performance scientific data reduction software for ESS and ISIS as part of the international team developing software for ESS. This is a lead developer role for the project and includes some aspects of work and project management
Work setup
- Address where the work will take place
- Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Didcot, Oxfordshire, OX11 0QX Some travel to international sites including ESS (Copenhagen, Denmark and Lund, Sweden) may be required
- Working arrangements

Monday to Friday 8:30 start, to fit in with the international team meetings
7.5 hours day + lunch
Expenses for travelling to other sites will be in line with public sector restrictions and expectations and UK Research and Innovation / STFC Policies - Security clearance

- Demonstrate how you will apply your skills and expertise of the following, to develop data reduction software for the ESS
- modern C++(>C++11) development on Linux, Windows and OS x
- and neutron diffraction and spectroscopy data analysis in software project management within the big science domain
- developing scientific data analysis software
- and Python scripting skills
- and unit, integration and performance testing
- and using CI tools (ideally Jenkins)
- and of working with large codebases and distributed teams in developing against hdf5, specifically the NeXuS format
- and of using EPICS (Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System) or equivalent
- and using expression templates for linear algebra (Eigen or equivalent)
- Nice-to-have skills and experience

- with cross-platform native build generators (CMake or equivalent)
- with mocking frameworks in native c++ (GMock or equivalent)
- with unit test frameworks for c++ (GTest or equivalent)
- with microbenchmarking frameworks (Google Benchmark or equivalent)
- of developing scientific software at a neutron scattering or x-ray facility
- in C++ development for high-performance applications

- This is unable to be determined at this time as it is possible for contractors who are both in and out of scope of the off payroll working rules to be engaged through DOS.
