What the specialist will work on
The Sofware Tester will:
Write test cases and scripts for software iterations and releases
Facilitate UAT, record, analyse and feedback results
Conduct functional and regression testing on software iterations and releases
Support Mock Runs by capturing issues and testing reported faults
Document tests, acceptance criteria and sign off
Escalate and assess risks to the business

This will be requried for College Learn MVP, Assessment Information Management Solution (AIMS) and Day One Assessment (the College's police recruit assessment centre)

Working arrangements
Onsite 3 days per week, working from home/other College sites rest of the time
Security clearance
Vetting required: NPPV2, CTC (SC -desirable).
Happy to put successful candidate through vetting process.
Will have access to OFFICIAL - SENSITIVE police information, systems, assets and will be working at Old Queens Street/ Vauxhall with unescorted access to the building.

Essential skills and experience
  • Extensive understanding and experience of writing and executing functional and non-functional tests for web applications
  • Extensive experience generating test cases/scripts directly from UX/UI design specifications and style guides
  • Extensive experience testing responsively designed web applications across a wide variety of devices (mobile, tablet, desktop), platforms (iOS, Android, Windows etc.) and browsers (IE, Edge, Chrome, Firefox etc.)
  • Extensive experience testing against W3C's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA standard for accessibility compliance
  • Experience testing responsive web applications built using the Bootstrap 3/4 framework
  • Working knowledge of using and maintaining test plans and test suites within Microsoft Team Foundation Server/Azure DevOps Server
  • Experience testing using a wide variety of tools/techniques, including the use of automated testing
  • Understanding of Continuous Deployment (CD) processes
Nice-to-have skills and experience
  • Experience using Katalon Studio and Selenium for automated testing
  • Understanding and awareness of coding practices and languages, including HTML5 semantics

1. Is there a current incumbent?

3. Will you accept someone working full time remote?
No, the role will be based on site 3 days per week with the flexibility to work from home or other college sites for the remaining days.
4. Is it outside IR35?
Yes, it is outside IR35.
5. If the successful applicant has to wait for clearance to be approved, will the start date be moved out?
The start date will be reconsidered depending on the clearance status of the successful candidate.
6. Is the rate inclusive of potential agency fee (all-inclusive except VAT)?

7. The choice of framework is irrelevant from a testing perspective, and in many cases testers don't even know what framework is being used, so why has Bootstrap 3/4 experience been specified as an essential requirement rather than experience of any responsive design framework?
We found in the past that false positives had been raised during testing due to a misunderstanding of how the Bootstrap framework flows content. We therefore listed this as essential so that any testers we recruit have this understanding already embedded. Strong evidence of experience testing against other responsive frameworks will also be considered.
8. Experience of non-functional testing is shown as being essential, but the role description does not mention any non-functional testing activities such as security, performance, load, stress, usability, reliability etc. What non-functional testing does the role involve?
In the context of this project we have classed accessibility testing and visual testing against designs as being non-functional as opposed to functional tests.
9. Should we submit identical generic responses for the two roles (which seems pointless) or should we tailor each response to demonstrate the experience of the specific testers we would be putting forward for the roles?
Your response for each of the two roles should be specific to the tester you are putting forward for that role.
10. Can you confirm that a working day is 7.5 hours?
The typical work day is 7.5 hours, however our expectation is that the tester will work in line with the project demands and will be required to be flexible. It is the responsibility of the tester to ensure work is completed in the hours dedicated to work.
11. Extremely few functional testers have more than a superficial understanding of the W3C's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. Would you allow us to substitute a professional accessibility consultant (at the same day rate) when accessibility testing is required?
No, we expect all proposed testers to have the level of W3C’s WCAG experience as specified in the requirement.
12. Can the project schedule accommodate the tester taking 2 to 3 weeks' holiday, ideally during June to August? If not, how much holiday can they take and when?
The tester will be required to meet the defined project goals by the end date of the contract. It is therefore their sole responsibility to ensure sufficient time is allocated to completing this work on time.
