We are looking for a superb Agile Coach to help our cross functional delivery teams reach the next level of maturity on their continuous journey, focused on effective ways of working. The specialist will also help other stakeholders understand the benefits of Agile, both from a cultural and delivery mindset.

Who the specialist will work with
Day to day the specialist will work with an existing community of 15 cross functional delivery teams and the individuals within them, that have varying levels of experience. The teams are split across London, Croydon and Sheffield. The specialist will also work closely with the Head of Product Management and Head of Agile Delivery to help increase the effectiveness and maturity of these teams and the individuals within them. In addition to this, there will also be some engagement with stakeholders who have an interest in Agile.
What the specialist will work on
This role includes :
Coach, Mentor, Support, Teach and Inspire the Delivery teams;
Work with multiple, cross-functional teams to deliver high value;
Assess team ways of working effectiveness and identify areas to work with teams and individuals to help them continuously improve;
Own, develop and drive a coaching backlog and the adoption of Agile practices and techniques;
Train, develop, mentor and support a community of delivery managers;
Challenge the business to think in an evolutionary manner and support the transformation of culture and ways of working; and
Help create an open/trust based environment, enabling a focus on delivery/facilitates continuous improvement.

Work setup

Address where the work will take place
Metro Point, Croydon and Marsham Street, Central London. Occasional travel to Sheffield required. Day rate to include Travel and Subsistence within the M25 area.
Working arrangements
Required to be on site at the Home Office for the majority of the week. Must try to balance time across team sites in Metro Point, Croydon and Marsham Street, Central London. Travel arrangements to Sheffield will be covered.
Security clearance
Have or willing to undergo - CTC minimum, SC preferred

Skills and experience

Buyers will use the essential and nice-to-have skills and experience to help them evaluate suppliers’ technical competence.

Essential skills and experience
  • Experience in coaching a variety of disciplines within teams – product owners, developers, testers, user researchers, interaction designers etc.
  • Be able to demonstrate in depth knowledge of Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) and practical examples of how it’s been applied.
  • Experience in introducing the use of metrics in teams that measure effectiveness such as lead time, cycle time, touch time to name a few.
  • In depth understanding and direct experience of different agile and lean approaches in delivery teams.
  • In depth understanding of the importance of and direct experience of influencing governance, process and culture across: portfolio management, programme and project team levels.
  • Evidence of embedding agile tools and techniques across multiple teams and be able to use knowledge and experience to help team select the right tool for the right job.
  • Demonstrate a broad experience of different industries, private and public, transactional digital services, redefining customer interaction and case studies of what good looks like.
  • Demonstrable experience of creating sustainable change towards agile and lean ways of working for the better in an organisation.
  • Proven ability to help teams understand and put into practice more advanced Kanban methods.
  • Ability to work in environments that are undergoing complex change, working in an iterative manner, evolving conversations and understanding how far to challenge and when.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, negotiating and influencing skills at all levels of seniority.
  • Knowledge and experience of Lean working and principles
  • Be able to talk confidently about the benefits of introducing BDD / TDD.

Questions asked by suppliers

1. In terms of balancing time between Croydon and London sites what would a typical week look like given that daily travel costs need to be factored in. Could it be one week in London and the following in Croydon or every other day or part of the day in London and then Croydon in the same day?
This will evolve based on the needs of the teams. We currently have 6 teams in Croydon and 6 in London though our sense is the focus will be on the Croydon teams initially and the role holder can expect to spend at least 3 days a week in Croydon. We also have 4 teams in Sheffield and whilst we think the Sheffield teams are well catered for in terms of agile process and coaching, occasional travel to Sheffield may be required.
2. Given the application date of 25th Oct and start date of 6th November, when are interviews expected to take place and when is it expected a decision will be made? Latest start date is now 30th November. The candidate is to be available to start by the 30th but the actual start date will be subject to the specialist achieving the necessary security clearance.

5. Will the Coach be working on a particular programme of work or will they be working across a portfolio of programmes?
The Coach will be expected to work with team, working with digital delivery teams from projects across multiple portfolios and programmes.
