About the work
- Why the work is being done
-
ONS has been progressively embracing cloud services and we are looking to take stock of cloud initiatives throughout the organisation, to help build the full picture of Cloud presence and inform areas of activity to enhance the capability within the ONS to manage and administer these services.
The requirement is to undertake a discovery to identify all areas within Digital Services and Technology (DST) Division that use the Cloud, document their administration process, the architecture and services used so they can be undertaken by IT Operations and merged into processes (e.g. Starters, leavers and Movers) also identifying opportunities for automation. - Problem to be solved
-
ONS' IT function has embraced Cloud First strategy (CO/GDS) and had a number of strands of parallel work in Cloud technologies, primarily driven through Agile approaches.
Hollistically IT Operations is now looking to pull together all of the information about each of these initiatives and develop a capability to effectively centrally govern the Cloud Services that are used, and operate the administration of each cloud instance ensuring transparent billing, compliance etc. - Who the users are and what they need to do
- In this instance the 'user' with the 'need' is the IT Operations Cloud Admin Function which is looking to build understanding of the total landscape of Cloud Services that it will be looking to govern

The Supplier will innitially enage with the newly formed IT Cloud Admin function that sits within the IT Operations Division.
The engagement will require the supplier to work with key stakeholders accross the rest of the IT function (Architecture, Development/DevOps etc) and undertake discovery of how those areas utilise the cloud services. - Current phase
- Discovery
Work setup
- Address where the work will take place
- Office based at ONS Newport with potential travel to ONS offices in Titchfield or London.
- Working arrangements
-
This discovery is going to center primarily on the face to face gathering of information from Stakeholders in the IT function.
It is likely that this will be onsite at the Newport, South Wales location of ONS with the potential for some time (a few days) at the Titchfield/Fareham facility
It is highly unlikely the outcome of this discovery could be effective if undertaken remotely, so on site must be assumed. - Security clearance
- SC clearance will be needed for this discovery
